Lasers, neon, light bulbs, fibre optics, searchlights, floodlighting – they call this 'the greatest lightshow on Earth' and it's reputedly visible from space.
For 66 days a year during September, October and early November, over one million lamps illuminate six miles of Blackpool's seafront with garlands of light and more than 500 different tableaux and lighting features. There are illuminated scenes in 3D, objects and characters moving and dancing in winking points of light, landmarks like the Tower and the Pleasure Beach picked out in luminous detail, hotels floodlit in iridescent washes, and even the trams are illuminated. It's Wonderland at the flick of a switch...
A full time staff of thirty people, including electricians, joiners, mechanics, painters, artists and engineers, work all year round to ensure that the Blackpool Illuminations are ready for switch on, then put to bed afterwards ready for the next year. It's a far cry from the very first Illuminations in 1879, even before the invention of the light bulb, when 100,000 people flocked to see what was described as 'artificial sunshine' created by eight arc lamps bathing the Promenade in light.
With a visit to Chester and the home of spring water at Buxton, plus travel, hotel, dinner on Friday night and English breakfast, this Omega break should make anyone's face light up.

Friday From a morning pick–up in your local area we travel to one of the most scenic areas in the country. Buxton, in the Peak District, is the highest market town in England and a Georgian spa modelled on Bath. The Opera House was built by the designer of the London Palladium, while the railway station was created by Joseph Paxton who built the Crystal Palace. There's a Pavilion and Gardens, a Devonshire Dome that was the world's largest until 1992, a lush and exotic Winter Gardens and lots of galleries and boutiques.
Don't miss the chance of a drink of fresh spring water at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent. It flows non–stop all year round, it's surprisingly warm, and it's the best water you'll ever taste. We'll rejoin the coach in the late afternoon and travel to your hotel in good time for you to enjoy dinner.
Saturday Off to Blackpool for a day on the Golden Mile, up the Tower, along the piers, or down the Pleasure Beach.
There's a Sea Life Centre here, a circus, Madame Tussauds, a waterpark, a zoo and a model village. And then, in the evening, on come the Illuminations and we board the coach for a journey through electric fairyland. Later we return to your hotel for your second night's stay.
After breakfast we head by coach to Chester. This is one of the best–preserved walled cities in Britain, with medieval–style black–and–white half–timbering, a neo–Gothic town hall, a Norman castle with museum, a Norman cathedral, the Eastgate Clock which is said to be the most photographed clock in Britain after Big Ben, and The Rows, containing unique crypt–like shops set below street level. We'll rejoin the coach for home in the afternoon.
